Summer’s Not Over! Fun Times Continue in RiverSouth.

 

In RiverSouth, August is the month to visit and repeat. From family-friendly and adult-only events to the return of a medieval classic and Native American cultural activities—it all happens in the Land of Big Fun!

Kids Day

Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart, Valleyfair is the place to be. Every Wednesday in August is Kids Day featuring fun activities just for kids. Plus, every Thursday in August is Midway Movies. Take in your favorite family films under the stars at Midway Stage. Movies start at dusk and are free with park admission. Visit Valleyfair on August 10 to celebrate Snoopy’s birthday and get your paws on some cool birthday treats!

Summer in RiverSouth is all about entertainment, and Mystic Lake Casino has a great lineup coming to the Mystic Showroom this month. Love the 90s? Relive some of the era’s biggest hits on August 12 with 90s Explosion, featuring three of the top acts from the 90s music charts—En Vogue, Naughty by Nature and Tone Lōc. The following weekend fans of the King of Pop won’t want to miss Remember the Time – Tribute to Michael Jackson August 19 and 20, featuring all the music and moves of the legendary pop star. Rounding out the month is late night legend and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno bringing an evening of classic stand-up to RiverSouth on August 27. If you’re in search of free entertainment options, Mystic Lake hosts their Friday Night Dance Party every Friday night featuring a live DJ and the Mystic Dancers, and a different live band on the Promenade Stage every Saturday night. Canterbury Park continues its Thursday through Sunday racing schedule in August with Saturday post time moving to evenings for the month. Racing begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays, August 6, 13 and 20 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 27.

Indian Relay - 8-27-15 005

The $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby takes place on Saturday, August 27 and is Canterbury Park’s richest race.  An exhibition of Indian Horse Relay, high-speed bareback racing, will also be featured on the track that evening. Indian Horse Relay showcases 16 teams representing eight American Indian nations competing for $50,000 in prize money. Indian Horse Relay will also occur Thursday and Friday, August 25 and 26 with two trial heats each night. The top eight teams from those trials advance to the Canterbury Park Indian Horse Relay Inter-Tribal Championship on Saturday, August 27.  An Indian market will be featured this weekend with a unique variety of Native American arts and crafts.

Summer is flying by, and we’ll take all the outdoor dining opportunities we can get. Enjoy a stunning golf course view from the patio at The Meadows Bar and Grille at Mystic Lake. Stop by Monday through Friday for their $5 patio grill lunch specials with summer classics like grilled brats, burgers and hot dogs. Looking for a late night under the stars? Try the cigar and martini menu from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am Friday and Saturday nights featuring over a dozen specialty martinis and five cigar options.

Canterbury Beer Fest returns on Saturday, August 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. Participating breweries will feature a variety of the best domestic, imported, specialty, craft, seasonal and micro-brewed beers available in Minnesota. Live horse racing is included with your Beer Fest ticket admission.

Join Valleyfair in the fight against childhood cancer during Valleyfair Cares. A portion of tickets sold online, August 18 through September 9, will benefit Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Last year Valleyfair Cares raised more than $45,000 for the organization.

Huzzah! Grab your crowns, pirate hat and fairy wings for opening weekend at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. The first weekend of seven kicks off Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21 with the 2016 season bringing new attractions to the festival. Take flight at Wizards Flight Zip Line. The zip line gives festival goers a chance to learn how to soar over the kingdom and see the historic renaissance grounds! Renaissance Bingo is another addition to the festival this year. Enjoy Bloody Marys and brunch while playing bingo daily at 1 p.m.

Save five dollars on your Renaissance admission and donate to those in need by bringing in five large cans of non-perishable food for 360 Communities. This special promotion is valid between 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. August 20 & 21, August 27 & 28 and Labor Day weekend. Save lives and donate blood at the Renaissance Blood Drive August 20 & 21. Receive a free admission ticket to the Renaissance Festival for donating blood.


Dancers of all ages will gather at the annual Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi (Pow Wow) Friday, August 19 through Sunday, August 21 at the Wacipi Grounds on the SMSC reservation near Mystic Lake Casino.

The World Amateur Highland Games Championship comes to the Renaissance Festival Saturday, August 27. The top ten amateurs from the nation will compete for a professional status in this sport. The games continue Sunday, August 28 with the Minnesota State Highland Games and Midwest Woman’s Highland Games.

Tackle the dog days of summer with a trip down the tallest side-by-side waterslides in the country at Soak City Waterpark at Valleyfair. Breakers Plunge is a thrill-seeker’s dream, sending riders down a 90-foot, 65-degree angle at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. These towering slides will leave even the most daring riders captivated.
